Work on Your Business, Not in Your Business: The Key to Success in Life and Business!

Disclaimer: The concept of Working on Your Business and Not in Your Business, I first heard from Mr. Saurav Kasera, my mentor and co-founder, CLIRNET. In this article, I am attempting to delve deeper into my understanding of this profound and fundamental concept. Though I have written from a founder/CEO perspective, the concept can be practiced by any Leader at any level.

Introduction

In the vibrant world of Indian entrepreneurship, the transformation from being deeply involved in day-to-day operations to becoming a visionary strategist can deeply impact the fate of businesses. This shift from managing the business to shaping its direction represents more than a change in responsibilities; it signifies a profound shift in mindset that steers individuals toward sustainable success.

Understanding the Difference

Working in your business typically involves day-to-day tasks, firefighting, and being deeply involved in operational aspects. On the other hand, working on your business means focusing on strategic planning, growth initiatives, and creating systems that allow the business to thrive independently.

Real-Life Example 1: The Story of Ritesh Agarwal and OYO

Take the example of Ritesh Agarwal, the founder of OYO Rooms. In the initial stages, Ritesh was deeply involved in the operations of his hotel aggregation business. However, as OYO scaled, Ritesh realized the importance of working on the business. He shifted his focus to building a scalable technology platform, expanding internationally, and forging strategic partnerships, which catapulted OYO into a global success story.

Real-Life Example 2: The Evolution of Swiggy

Similarly, Swiggy, India’s leading food delivery platform, has transformed from a modest startup to a formidable tech powerhouse by prioritizing strategic growth initiatives. Rather than simply delivering food, Swiggy has concentrated on refining logistics, enriching the user experience through technology, and broadening its range of services. This approach has resulted in remarkable growth and market leadership.

The Importance of Delegation and Systems

One crucial element of running your business involves delegation. Entrepreneurs must assemble proficient teams and have faith in them to manage daily activities while they concentrate on more advanced strategies. By establishing strong systems and processes, operations can be streamlined, inefficiencies minimized, and sustainable growth made possible.

Overcoming Challenges

Transitioning from working in the business to working on the business is undoubtedly challenging. Many entrepreneurs find it difficult to let go of control, experience apprehension towards delegation, and get weighed down by the tendency to micromanage. Nevertheless, acknowledging these challenges and making a conscious effort to undergo mindset shifts and develop new skills can truly open doors to success.

Conclusion

In the ever-changing world of Indian business, it’s crucial to remember the mantra of “work on your business, not in your business.” By embracing a strategic approach, delegating responsibilities effectively, and keeping an eye on long-term growth, entrepreneurs can overcome obstacles, discover new possibilities, and establish successful businesses that endure the test of time.
