Hitting the Half Marathon- My own Learnings for Life and Business!!

Today, the 21st of January 2024, will be an unforgettable day for me. I achieved a major milestone by completing my first 10K run in the half marathon event organized by the Kolkata Police to promote the message of “Save Drive Save Life.” I finished the run in good time, which feels like a significant accomplishment for me as a novice. This experience has given me some valuable lessons and insights that I can apply to both my personal life and my business.

In Life:

Embracing Challenges

Life is filled with numerous challenges, and it’s okay to feel overwhelmed at times. It’s important to remember that the rewards waiting for us are just as significant. When we face challenges, there are typically two types of responses. The first type tends to focus solely on the obstacles, often making them seem larger than they actually are until they feel insurmountable. On the other hand, the second type sees the potential rewards and opportunities, immediately taking steps to overcome the hurdles. The first type may struggle to take action, seeing the obstacles as impassable barriers. Meanwhile, the second type envisions themselves as having already triumphed over the challenges and focuses on the necessary steps to do so. Both types acknowledge the hurdles, but the first deems them as insurmountable, while the second embraces the process of conquering them by concentrating on their desired outcomes.

First Principle

Breaking down the biggest obstacle into smaller, more manageable steps is crucial. Even if we don’t reach for the moon, we can still land among the stars. Currently, I am focusing on achieving my next goal of 21K, and then I plan to set an even higher target of 42K. Life offers us abundant opportunities disguised as obstacles. Our task is to select these hurdles and break them down into small steps. With every milestone accomplished, it’s important to celebrate, as it provides us with the confidence for the next stage.

Building on Strengths

We are often advised to focus solely on our weaknesses for improved results, as we are already competent in our strengths. It’s always challenging to excel in areas where we are deficient, as we tend to dislike them. However, if we concentrate on the areas in which we excel, we will perform significantly better. Today, I saw an individual in an event whose inner strength was truly awe-inspiring. Despite having only one leg and relying on crutches for support, he proudly carried our national flag while walking with a broad smile on his face. His resilience and determined spirit were truly remarkable as he crossed the 2.9 kilometers AJC Bose Road Flyover with uphill and downhill sections. His journey must have been an immense task for him. If he had solely focused on his weakness of having only one leg, he would never have developed the strength to embark on this journey. He must have worked on nurturing his inner strength, endurance, resilience, and unwavering spirit of perseverance.

Being Consistent

Consistency is crucial in life’s journey. Everyone is fighting their own battle and has their individual clock to contend with. In the event I attended, I saw people who ran so fast at the beginning that they didn’t have enough energy to cover the entire lap. They gave up in the middle. It’s a reminder of the importance of pacing and consistency in our endeavors.

Enjoying the Journey
It’s truly wonderful to immerse ourselves in the experience without constantly worrying about the end goals. I remember my run today, where every moment felt precious – the refreshing weather, the beautiful sunrise, and the uplifting conversations with my fellow runners. The sight of large hoardings at every kilometer marked that incredible surge of dopamine, urging me forward. The anticipation grew with each approaching interval marker, and the rush of dopamine and serotonin overwhelmed me as I saw the finishing line just a meter away. The sense of achievement upon crossing that line was truly indescribable.

Making a Difference
When we attach a purpose or cause to our actions, the joy we experience becomes even more profound. The knowledge that our efforts are contributing to something meaningful ignites a powerful sense of purpose within us. The larger the cause, the greater the impact, and the stronger the call from within. During the event, our mission was to help spread the vital message of “Save Drive, Save Life” on behalf of the Kolkata Police. Knowing that our actions could potentially reach millions truly fueled a deep sense of purpose within me.

In Business:

Embracing Challenges
In business, it’s important to embrace challenges with an understanding of the possibilities they can bring when overcome. Sometimes, we may need to forgo quick gains and focus on the long-term possibilities that can turn our company into a huge revenue-generating machine.

Approaching the First Principle with Empathy

In order to truly connect with our customers, we need to break down the larger problem into smaller, more relatable issues. By focusing on addressing these specific concerns, we can improve the lives of our customers with our initial solutions, thereby earning their trust and receiving valuable, genuine feedback for the next level of solutions.

Embracing Strengths
Each company possesses its own set of strengths. It is crucial to focus on these strengths while also addressing any weaknesses. By continually building on these strengths, team members gain a significant boost in confidence to propel them to the next level.

Consistency is Key
Consistency plays a vital role in the journey of building a business, from its humble beginnings to reaching extraordinary success. It involves taking calculated risks and ensuring that the business operates smoothly without encountering permanent damage. While minor setbacks are manageable, a severe and lasting blow can unfortunately lead a startup to a complete shutdown.

Embracing the Experience

Embracing the experience until the very end. The hard work should be approached with a joyful heart, knowing that each team member’s unique contributions can lead to impactful solutions for billions of people. The greater the impact, the greater the revenue potential for the company.

Creating an Impact

The Founder’s role is fulfilled when she successfully instills the Company’s Vision and the purpose or cause they are advocating for. However, the Vision should not merely be framed on a wall, but it should evolve into a belief held by every member of the team. As the Company grows, the Vision may evolve, but with each change, the Founder must articulate how they aim to create a positive impact in the lives of billions.

Conclusion:

Life and business are deeply interconnected. The valuable lessons we learn in life are incredibly relevant to the world of business. By reflecting on our actions, experiences, and accomplishments, we can uncover fundamental principles that can greatly impact both our personal and professional endeavors. Today from the Event I got reminded of the importance of embracing challenges, leveraging our strengths, understanding the compound effect of first principles, maintaining consistency, savoring the journey, and making a positive impact on society for a better future.
